Globe Telecom to hold 1st Media Excellence Awards in Cebu

Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom is set to hold its first Media Excellence Awards in Cebu to provide an opportunity and venue for print and broadcast journalists as well as bloggers to be recognized in their fields of work.



Search period is from September 2011 to July 2012, with the deadline for submission of entries on July 31, 2012. Screening period is from August 1-31, 2012 while awarding of winners is on September 21, 2012.



All entries shall explore and advocate various social concerns such as ignorance, poverty and corruption, with major consideration on their social impact on business and entrepreneurship, information and communications technology, environment and disaster response, governance and social progress, and youth and education.

For over a decade already, Globe remains a staunch supporter of the Cebu Press Freedom Week. Globe realized that to defend, sustain, and broaden basic democratic right through print, broadcast or social media, continued pursuit of media excellence is of utmost importance.

Thus, on September 21, 2011, Globe introduced the annual Globe Media Excellence Awards alongside the celebration of Cebu Press Freedom Week to recognize Cebu media who are breaking new grounds in news dissemination and who possess the best in communication skills and creativity.

“Beyond the daily coverage of developing events, Globe wants to further encourage media excellence in civic, investigative, and explanatory journalism that would delve into social concerns. Media excellence is crucial if our country should lead forward in terms of social and economic development within an atmosphere of freedom,” said Yoly C. Crisanto, head of Globe Corporate Communications Division.

Award categories include Reporter of the Year and Feature Story of the Year for Print, Radio, and TV; Columnist of the Year; Radio Broadcaster of the Year; TV Broadcaster of the Year; and Blogger of the Year. Prizes range from P10,000 – P20,000 per winner plus a trophy. Editors of the winning reporters will also receive P5,000 and a trophy.

The judges’ decisions for the writing categories shall be based on the following criteria: content, 50 percent; style, 25 percent; and social impact, 25 percent. For the bloggers, there must be consistency of content on the advocacy, 50 percent; reader friendly presentation and design content, 20 percent; and social impact, 30 percent.

Leading the prestigious panel of judges is Father Dionisio Miranda, SVD, who brought to the University of San Carlos Presidency a wealth of experience as a scholar, educator, and pastor. Fr. Miranda is also an author of six books and a winner of the Gintong Aklat Award of the National Book Development Association of the Philippines.

Entry forms are downloadable from www.globe.com.ph/meawards. Participants must complete the entry form together with his/her entries, enclose them in a long brown envelope, and mail or deliver to Globe Media Excellence Awards c/o Mr. Jerry Yntig, Globe Telecom, Cebu IT Park, Lahug, Cebu City 6000. Entries must be in duplicate and should be accompanied with the photocopy of the participant’s company ID.
